Obituary for Arleen Larson

Arleen Larson (widow of Bud), age 98, of Watertown, passed away February 8, 2019.

Goldie Arleen Hanson was born on January 19, 1921, in rural Hayti, South Dakota, the daughter of George E. and Agnes M. (Danielson) Hanson. Arleen attended school in Hayti and Watertown, South Dakota, graduating in 1938. Arleen was employed as a secretary at the Barton Hospital and Clinic in Watertown and Honeywell in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She married Waldemar “Bud” Larson on September 15, 1944, at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. Arleen was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and became a charter member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in 1960.

She enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom and being involved with her children’s lives by being a Girl Scout leader, Boy Scout leader, and Sunday school teacher for many years. In the past she was a member of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the Priscilla Circle, the former Watertown Adult Literacy Council, and PEO. Arleen was also a former member of the Codington County Historical Society, and a member of the Soanete Club that met monthly for over 50 years.

Arleen is survived by her son, Warren B. (Marilyn) Larson of Plymouth, MN; daughters, Annette (Dennis) Von Bargen of Aitkin, MN, Louise (Larry) Riddle of Rapid City, SD, and Marilyn (J. Lynn) Thomas of Sioux Falls, SD; as well as her two foreign exchange students, Nerie (Kits) Madulid of CA and Tilman (Marie) Bay of Germany; Arleen’s grandchildren, Nathan (Violet) Larson, Joshua (Sarah Ann) Larson, Gottfried (Jennifer) Bay, Sarah Beth von Bargen (Kenny Blumenfeld), Lisa (Joseph) Vigil, Ann (Ron) Riddle-Berntsen, David (Brandy) Riddle, Quinn (Haley) Thomas, York (Megan) Thomas, and Perrin Thomas; her great-granddaughters, Nevellie and Allegra Larson, Emily and Lily Vigil, Maya Larson, August Berntsen, and Gillian Bay; her great-grandsons, Noah Larson, Henry Thomas, Henrik and Hanson Riddle, Larson Berntsen, and Ezra and Ottar Blumenfeld. Arleen is also survived by her brother, Arden O.G. Hanson of Anoka, MN; brothers-in-law, Richard Nelson and Stan Clothier; and sister-in-law, Nellie Larson.

Arleen was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Larson; parents; three sisters, Joyce Yvonne Hanson (infant), Lucille Clothier, Deloris Nelson; as well as Betty and Bob Larson, and Ethelyn and Bill Larson.
